How Much Coffee Should I Use?
The recommend amount of coffee by the Specialty Coffee Association of America is 10 grams per 6 oz cup. Since most people do not have a gram scale, a standard measure for coffee is two tablespoons per 6-ounce cup of coffee.
The average K-Cup has 9 to 12 grams (0.3 to 0.4 ounces) of ground coffee. The actual amount inside your K-Cups depends on which brand you buy.
You’ll also find slightly more coffee in dark roast K-Cups.
Here are our recommendations for brewing coffee. Coffee is a recipe. Experiment to discover how you prefer yours!
| Cup Size | Grams of Coffee | Tablespoons of Coffee | Scoops* of Coffee | Stronger (tbsp) |
| 6 oz | 10 | 2 | 1 | 2.6 |
| 8 oz | 13.3 | 2.6 | 1.3 | 3.1 |
| 10oz | 16.6 | 3.1 | 1.6 | 4 |
| 12 oz | 20 | 4 | 2 | 4.6 |
You may notice your reusable k-cup only holds about 2 tablespoons of coffee. According to the Specialty Coffee Association of America, that is enough for a 6 oz cup of coffee. Brewing a 10oz or 12oz k-cup will result in a more watered down cup of coffee. If that is what you like, then great! However, if you want a larger cup of coffee than the k-cup can produce, we suggest a pour over.
